Peaks of the Evolution Group, Kings Canyon, National Park, California, 1992
This photo was taken on a far ranging backpack. Walt and Cass Shoeber, owners of North Lake Pack Station, had offered to carry our gear over Piute Pass. Walt is a fifth generation rancher in the Owens Valley and former outfitter. Many lakes in the Bishop Pass region were named by Walt's grandfather. My wife Nancy and I accepted Walt's offer. I was getting tired of humping 85 pound first day packs over passes, only to be crippled the day after. After our gear drop we crossed a trailess pass over the Glacier divide to what was formerly known as "Francis Lake". The view embraced all the major summits of the Evolution region. I made four similar exposures inthe late afternoon light.
Our trip continued for 16 days and I took five more photos. We found two very interesting things on the trip. One was an old and original summit register on an obscure peak on the Glacier Divide. The other was) what I have subsequently come to deduce) a circular alignment of rocks that was obviously very old and deliberatly placed. I have found a few similar alignments, always in remote areas and always along what would be an obvious and ancient Native American trade route.
