Tulainyo Lake, Sequoia National Park, California, 1993

I first saw and photographed this composition in 1979, but the light lacked the ephemeral quality that I wanted and imagined. This is not an easy photograph to take. The climb to Mount Carillon involves a cross country elevation gain of 5,000 feet. A high pass near Carillon provides access over the crest and I have crossed it many times over the years. Each time I hoped to find the perfect lighting. Finally, in 1993, I hiked to my familiar perch to find an eerie cloud layer had settled over the range. The light of the setting sun slipped under the clouds and softly warmed the landscape. Luckily for an elevation of 13,500 feet there was no wind to disturb my exposure and the contrast range of the subject fit easily on my transparency film.
