Bristlecone Pines, White Mountains, California, 1996
Michael Choen, author of A Garden of Bristlecone Pines, and I had been touring parts of the Great Basin together. Each of us working on our respective books. Michael kept me throroughly entertained describing paleoecology of the basin, the history of Bristlecone research, and his reaction to the landscape. Michael's ramblings alone were worth the trip.
We had been looking at Native American dwelling ruins when we decided to "take a look at those Bristlecones over there". What we walked into was easily the most amazing grove either of us had even seen. The trees presented a fantastic array of different scupltings along a mile long ridge. At the end of the ridge we walked into an ancient Native American house ring. Obsidian chips were scattered around the ring. It was a room with an expansive view.
I made this photograph on this walk and returned several times to visit this fantastic sculpture garden. |
